It’s what we all want, right ?
For our music to sound just as good as our favourite artists.
But how do you know for sure if it does or not ?
The answer is to just do a fair comparison – but that’s actually much harder than you might think !
[Update – Watch the full 90-minute replay of my webinar where I demonstrate how to do this at the end of the post]
If you just play your song back-to-back with another commercial release, there’s a simple but subtle factor you need to take account of – otherwise you have no idea if the comparison is a fair one or not.
Apples and Oranges – or a Lemon ?
To make an accurate comparison, you need a level playing field, and that means level-matching.
Not the peak level though – you need to match the “loudness” – and you need to be careful how you go about it.
Luckily, it’s quite simple to achieve, and the good news is once you’ve carried out this straightforward step, your song may actually sound better than you thought it did, in comparison to your favourite artists.
Or it may not – but at least once you’ve level-matched, you’ll know that the judgements you make and the stuff you learn is real – not just a side-effect of the other song being hyped to the max in the mastering stage !
Loudness is in the ear of the listener
You probably already know I’m developing a plugin called Perception to help making comparisons like this really easy, but you can already do it yourself right now, by hand, using affordable plugins or the meters you already have in your DAW.
And this Sunday, I’m going to take you through the process, step by step, in a free live webinar.
I’ll be the guest on Grammy Award-winning Khaliq Glover‘s YouTube channel, and I’ll be demonstrating how to accurately loudness-match songs that you submit, comparing them with the songs you hope they sound like, and telling you what I hear.
If you want to get involved, here’s what to do
- Leave a comment below with a link where I can stream your song
- Let me know which other song you’d like me to loudness-match and compare it with
- That’s it !
I’ll take a listen and choose some interesting examples to use in the webinar.
I had a great time on the webinar, people seemed to enjoy it – you can watch the full replay here.
(My contribution starts around 2 hrs 6 minutes in, if the video doesn’t go to the right place automatically)
