Bob Gatzen is the king of drum tuning. By watching his videos and reading his articles in Modern Drummer, then practicing the techniques until I could use them effectively, I was able to play and record professionally on a $200 beginner's drum kit for years! I only got a new one when the hardware started falling apart!

As a pro touring drummer, I can tell you that you basically tune your drums every time you've transported them, as the skins are so sensitive to temperatures and bumps. Also, the tension usually fluctuates from day to day.

Every time I unpack my snare to rehearse/gig/whatever, I spend a couple of minutes first checking the lug tensions (which are usually fine) and then tune the entire snare either up or down a bit, depending on how the transportation has affected it.

I can also tell you that being able to tune drums will make the absolute difference between a good sounding kit or a bad sounding kit. If you're good at tuning drums, you can basically get any piece of crap kit to sound good enough. But if you're bad at it, it doesn't matter if the drums are custom built $9000 drums, they will sound bad anyways.

It's the exact same thing as with a guitar. You can have a 1959 Stratocaster, but if it isn't tuned it doesn't matter how good the guitar is.
