I would love to win a free membership for several reasons… I have been getting mastering work now for about 2 years. I’ve bought and learned some from several others products on the subject… but, other teaching videos, etc. don’t go into the WHEN’s and WHY’s enough… just the technical stuff.

I just moved to Taipei, Taiwan from the U.S. where I worked as a pro-drummer, wrote and produced and mastered corporate videos… and now my income is was down, as I’ll have to build up all of my connections again here. I have some video work coming in from the U.S. but, no local work yet. So, I’ve got time right now to get back into bringing up my skill set… but, I’m on a bit of a slow income stream at the moment. I just shipped over about 60 boxes of studio gear, drums and books… on a drummers budget. : )

I just bought your Enhanced-Mastering with Multiband Compression and I’m going through it now.

I love your teaching style and I’ve learned more from you already than anyone. I know this hands on… force me to do it style is what I need.

I’ll continue to buy your products… because they’re great. I’m dedicated to learning this gear and making the best music possible.

Thanks for continually sharing with everyone… you’re sharing your passion with us and it’s paying off for you and us… and you’re even giving above and beyond that… I applaud you. Thanks for your light !!!!

    Hi Ian
I’d love a place for the class because my dream is to be a pro musician. While I think I’m getting better with mixing, mastering would be the next thing to learn, to make my music sound better. Of course, I could just pay and sign up, but as a university student with 0 income, £97 is a bit over-budget. I know dreams don’t come at cheap price, but since you are offering free spots, I’m going for one of them.

P.S. The in-your-face-ness of the vocal in the trailer sounds SO AWESOME!!!

  3. Richie B says:

    Just read Scott’s post!

For the record, if I won a place – and he didn’t, I’d rather he got it than I did!

    That right there, is dedication!

  4. Marco Galdames says:

I would love to get the chance to be in this course. Mastering is my weak point, I always struggle trying to do a decent work because make it worse and ruin everything is so easy!!

  5. Edd L says:

Mastering is something I do in my spare time and something I love doing.
I’d love to learn more about it and explore new techniques, and it would be great to learn from you!

I did my dissertation on the loudness wars, and found your blog / website / interviews very insightful. Got a first for it too! Thanks for the help!

  6. Molecola says:

there are way too many infos out there on the net, i would really like to know some from a pro point of view. as for mastering in itself, i’d always go for a studio and engineer. unfortunately, in many occasions it’s not possible.

  7. Mike H says:

I first learned about the site from home studio corner. I never thought I needed to know mastering because I thought I knew it. Getting levels up are simple enough but after really digging in to the info you provide I then realized there is a lot more to it. I want to learn how to master without killing the dynamic range of the music. You speak a lot about this. To be honest my band Downpour just recorded its own CD in my humble studio. I felt like the tracks came out good as well as the mix. I then mastered it myself because we simply could not afford to do it locally. I followed some of the guide lines you pointed out on your website. I downloaded the dynamic range meter but was not all that versed at what I am doing. The master came out not as loud as most music I hear on the radio or online. In fact I find myself having to turn it up when listening to something else before it. I believe I was being over cautious of the dynamic range. This is why I need more advance training. So that I can continue to make good music and help others as well. I do a lot for the Christian communities and musicians in the area and most of them are young guys just getting going and do not have a lot of money. I have as well been struggling with the local economy and my contracting business has been dead for many months. I would love to take the course but funds do not allow it as I have to support my family first. If you chose me not only would I take it seriously and diligently learn what is given to learn. I would also use what I learn to help the local churches and praise teams to get there music recorded and mastered without charging them to master their project. What is freely given to me I will freely give. I would also remaster our CD. I would also be a good testimony for you. When people asked how did you learn to do this I would say Ian Sheppard and point them in your direction. I would also list it on my website as part of my credentials ” Mastering training under Ian Sheppard and send people to your site. I would hope that would get people to want and learn and come to your site for additional training as I. I hope that I am one of the chosen. I have bought many courses for mixing and the like from people like Joe and Graham as well as multi-platinum but all the ones I have seen on mastering are not from a pro mastering engineer. I wish I had the extra funds I would buy my spot. I just simply can not afford it. Thanks for the consideration. Please go and checkout what I did do with what I have learned. http://www.thedownpourband.com my studio website is http://www.injaudio.moonfruit.com

Mastering is a black art for me. I can make things sound really good at times. I can make things sound great at times. I can make things worse at times. I’m never quite sure why any of this ever happens.

  9. johnny says:

    Hi Ian,
I am from Croatia, love music and work as a sound engineer. Mostly at concerts, but I have done a lot of recordings and am in the process of building a home recording studio.
I would like to have a better understanding of mastering process but I can not afford it now. Building the studio took all my money…

I have done my best (to persuade you:),
    Great work, anyway!
    Best regards,
    Johnny

  10. James says:

Even though I have already been mastering on the side for 5 years, the learn process never stops. Mastering is funny how it seems so simple on the surface but the more you learn the deeper and deeper it gets. Would love to see your take on it.

  11. Norberto says:

    Hello Ian:
I’m very glad to take this Mastering Masterclass with you because I do need to upgrade my modest knowledge in mastering.
I have my own studio for 15 years and I do have some basic experience in mastering, and I feel what you are offering is a great opportunity for somebody like me who lives in Mexico, where classes like yours haven’t been accesible.
    Thank you.

I am currently working on mixing/mastering my band’s first album. Last November our singer, and major lyrical contributor, passed away. I have been stuck in quagmire since then mixing and remixing trying to get it to sound as close to perfection as we are not going to get another chance to track. The band seems pleased with where it is at, but I just can’t bring myself to release it without knowing I had taken every chance to get it right. I hope that the class will add more tool to my kit, so that I can close this chapter and move on to recording our next album.

    Hey Ian,

I would like a free place on the course because…

…I must be the only person who hasn’t joined Facebook yet!

To be involved in your course members area (on Facebook), would be the only thing, that has ever convinced me to join the dark side! :-)

    Kind Regards,

    Zac

  15. Luke Smith says:

    Hi Ian,
I love reading your articles! I’m not an active poster, in fact I don’t think I ever posted here, but I read almost everything I can from your site.
I am an independent musician living in the USA. I have loved music since I was a child, and have always wanted to be able to make music with a quality that would rival my favorite artists. I have been making recordings for about 7 years now, and I have learned a lot from many talented recording engineers. However, I haven’t found someone who is willing to teach me how to properly master my recordings. Almost all the recordings I send of to others end up sounding worse when I get them back, because I can’t afford any of the better mastering services. I had a friend from Nashville who always made my stuff sound better, but he recently died before he could teach me how to do it.
I record myself as often as I can, and I have sung and played with a few groups, but usually they can’t afford anything better than what I can already provide.

The reason that I want to become a member for free is because I have almost no money to spend. I just finished getting the funds for my studio, (I’m kind of tired of recording at church, the acoustics are perfect, but its a long drive.) and thus I’m out of money.

Which made me sad until I got an email saying that there is a chance! (a small chance, but not non-existant…) I would love to learn mastering from someone who both knows what there talking about, and is willing to share ‘secrets’. (How much is it true that recording engineers have speacial ‘secrets’? Most recordings seem to copy each other… Maybe that would be a good topic to cover some time…)

That doesn’t mean I’m out of hope though! Here’s hoping I’m lucky! (Sorry, I use puns too often…)

Hope I didn’t post this too late.
    Thanks,
    ~Luke

  16. Paul Evans says:

I’ve got here just because Joe Gilder recommended you and I got really curious on an point you made on describing the course, which I’ll explain below, and here is why I would really appreciate winning one Home Mastering Masterclass:

“It is the first time that I see that someone offers to explain on different DAWs, since I use Reaper, plus, I live in Chile, ot means that buying Cubase or similar (or better/ more expensive!) is quite expensive for me. And although this course is really affordable in terms of what it really promises, today I can’t spend that”.

Disclaimer: I work a lot and do not work in the music business or similar.

I just want to learn how to record my album without just guessing & fiddling with knobs and using my ears rather than understanding the why’s; since, I have little time to waste, I rather rely on someone who is willing to explain straight to the bone.
So It’s important for me letting you know that I won’t be able to follow the class as scheduled and probably skip a lot. I do know it can be downloaded for each one’s pace, but I bet that there are many others who deserve and will dedicate more than I can.

Well, that’s it :) thanks for the chance, anyway I’ve just subscribed for the free Plugins Course, so I’m already a lucky guy.

    All the best mate.

  17. Andy says:

No hard luck stories or persuasion tactic’s to express, just plain “Need to know!”.
    Thanks

  18. Hi Ian,

First of all, thanks so much for all the great advice I’ve gotten from you so far. Now it’s time to take the next step.

The main reason why I would like to be a “winner”?…simply put, we’re skint. But that hasn’t stopped us from growing our business. Our client list is growing because of the good work we do here. All by word of mouth.

We have a home based studio that caters to the solo artist and small band projects. My husband has 40+ years as a professional musician and I have to say the best pair of ears in the business. I am the computer nerd. It’s a good partnership. As we transition to our “golden years”, the studio is our best option because in engages our passions and allows us to give back to our community and lend a helping hand to those on their way up.

As you well know, musicians these days are not a financially secure lot either. But they are talented and their music is worth hearing. We aim to help these folks by offering affordable rates for excellent quality recordings. Being able to add mastering to our services would be the icing on the cake.

We use Presonus Studio Pro, it has a mastering suite. I need to learn how to use it. To study mastering with you is the opportunity I’ve been looking for.

Best of luck to all of you! Ian is a tremendous teacher and I know all of you will benefit greatly from his advice. I know I already have.

    All the Best,

    Angie Thompson
