Five fantastic ways to make music on your iPhone or iPod Touch

Last week I posted about a complete music track produced on an iPhone.

Already that’s out of date.

This week – an entire album produced on iPhone, using Intua’s fantastic Beatmaker app. (1)

And while we’re on the subject of iPhone music-making, here’s an in-depth look at Hexatone (2), which looks really interesting – for example, it allows you to use the built-in accelerometer for live performance input.

Continuing my theme, as I type I’m downloading and about to play with the new Underworld iDrum App (3) which allows you to remix classics like “Born Slippy” and “Cowgirl” on the iPhone.

Cool… : )

Meanwhile, none other than Imogen Heap has been experimenting with apps like Loopy (4) - and, no discussion of iPhone music-making (today) would be complete without mentioning the Noise.io synth (5), which was used to make many of the sounds in the track I posted last week.

So, is the studio dead ? Will the iPhone become the only way to make music in the future ? No. But there’s plenty of fun to be had in the meantime, none the less.

Don’t believe me ? I challenge anyone not to enjoy playing with Brian Eno’s interactive, generative, ambient “Bloom” app. (Oops, that’s 6)

No previous musical experience required…

What are your favourite iPhone music apps ?
