Resources & Information

On this site

First of all – check out the archive of old posts here on Production Advice. Usefully categorised for you, there’s masses of information hidden away. Also, have you tried the Search box yet ? Just up there on the right in the menu bar.

If you’d like some advice for your songs or mixes, there are two places you can get it here – via the special introductory offer – or, if you prefer, from the Production Advice Community on Twitter.

And speaking of Twitter, are you following @prodAdvice yet ? Every day I post a load of useful, interesting and sometimes amusing links, hints, tips and comments, mostly with a music & audio focus. Many are also posted on the Production Advice Tumblr blog too. Sign up to the RSS feed so you don’t miss any !

OK, enough blowing my own trumpet – here are some more of my favourite Production Advice resources online:

Recording & Production

nav_logo1Sound On Sound – Simply one of the best recording & mixing resources on the ‘web. Massive archives of past articles from the magazine – insightful gear reviews, techniques, interviews with bands and producers and more. Best of all are the forums – lively, well-organised and with some great contributors. Outstanding.

RecordProduction.com DO NOT visit this site unless you have several hours to kill. Seriously. Over 175 high-definition video interviews with top producers, by people who know exactly what they’re talking about. This is audio geek heaven.

mix_logo_0711Mix Online – Another fantastic site from one of the best audio magazines – Sound On Sound just noses ahead for us because of the forums, but this is another must-visit site. Both Mix and SOS feature so much material it can be tough to know where to start. Keep an eye out here for blog posts rounding up some of the best content.

smallgearslutz2GearSlutz – Some of the most active music, recording & production forums on the net. So many posts every day it’s easy to get lost in the noise – the Search facility is your friend.

HomeRecording.com – Another great forum. Don’t be fooled by the name, some of the “home” studios featured here have to be seen to be believed.

Recording.org – Quite strong moderation and strict about posting rules, but nevertheless some great people and information, especially in the Studio Construction forum.

Mastering Media – Written by me, with posts on a wide range of mastering-related subjects, plus DIY mastering techniques.

John Sayers’ Recording Studio Design Forum – An outstanding forum dedicated to studio design, construction and installation.

Music News & Web 2.0

New Music Strategies - Incisive, provocative thinking about the “New Music Industry”. Why might you want to give your music away for free ?

stevelawson.net – Steve Lawson’s blog is the one to read if you’re interested to know how to make a career from Web 2.0 music and social media.

The Daily Swarm – Music & media news, videos, mixtape. Great Twitter feed.

New Music Ideas – Reviews and opinions of websites designed to help independent artists and music businesses.

Digital Music Distribution

All these sites have different features and business models – we’ve added a few comments on the ones we know a little about, but you will need to check them out carefully yourself and decide which is best for you.

bandcamp

BandCamp – Slick, easy to use, great & carefully chosen feature-set – 100% free. Check out their video introduction

plugolaPlugo.la – More features than it’s competitors – also 100% free

ReverbNation – Supports iTunes, Amazon mp3, Rhapsody, Napster & eMusic – paid service
