10cc – I’m Not In Love in the recording studio

People loved this when I posted it on Twitter, and I thought it was well worth putting it up here, too.

If you think you put loads of effort into your recording and mixing – watch this, and think again ! Brings new meaning to the phrase “playing the studio”. No extra commentary is needed from me, I don’t want to spoil the fun – enjoy.

I have so much work to do at the moment I really shouldn’t be blogging, but this is just too good not to share.

The video above is number four in a sequence of song-writing tutorials posted by the awesome Artist’s House Music – if you aren’t already subscribed to their feed and Twitter account – do it now !

The post and videos speak for themselves – they contain a subtle but devastatingly effective songwriting rule:

Preserve the natural shape of the language

Watch the videos and see ! (Watch all of them, they’re great.)

But now comes the bit that made me laugh out loud and want to write this post. When you watch the video above, do you notice anything about the sound ? (Aside from what a great voice that girl has?!)

Yes – another Brian Eno post ! But it’s completely worth it. This Arena documentary about possibly my favourite music producer is simply outstanding – partly because it contains plenty of Eno snippets for the enthusiast, but also because it’s beautifully made and put together – fascinating, intelligently chosen visuals and audio accompany the interviews throughout.

It’s also great for me to see Eno in his Suffolk habitat, because that’s where I grew up, too – and seeing the familiar serene, slightly surreal landscapes accompanied by his music and words somehow makes perfect sense in a way that hadn’t registered with me before.

I think this video speaks for itself – I love it.

It’s by Diego Stocco, who was also responsible for the “Music From A Tree” video I posted on the Production Advice Tumblr blog yesterday.

Why do I love it ? Because it’s:

  • Beautiful
  • Musical
  • Witty
  • Unique
  • Original
  • Punky

- wait, punky ?  [Insert FX of record scratch/car screeching to a halt/etc]

What the hell am I talking about ?

Do you make these music recording mistakes ?

Oops

Production is not all about technology, microphone placement and mixing.

Don’t get me wrong, there will be plenty written and discussed here about those recording techniques, but hidden between the lines of my earlier post is an important  message:

The secret of a great mix is to get a great performance and arrangement. Everything else will fall into place.

The question is – how ?
