When you compare your music to your favourite songs and artists, how does it sound?

Did you say "great" ?

Did you say "OK" ?

Did you say "Not so good..." ?

Whatever you answered, now answer this question:

Are you sure you were right with that answer ?

Because comparing our music to other similar songs isn't quite as simple as you may think.

"Just upload a reference song and listen back-to-back", right ?

Wrong.

There's a crucial step you need to take first - and if you don't, you have no idea what you're really listening to.

Yet.

Because luckily, that crucial step is very simple - and incredibly revealing. I actually find this technique so powerful, I think if it as "x-ray vision" for your mix or master.
